PARENTS AS TEACHERS IS AN EVIDENCE-DRIVEN HOME VISITING MODEL
More than a dozen outcome studies have been conducted on the effects of the Parents as Teachers model. Studies published in peer-reviewed journals show statistically significant and sustained effects. Outcome data have been collected on more than 16,000 children and parents. Evaluations of Parents as Teachers have been supported by states, independent school districts, private foundations, universities and research organizations. With each new evaluation, we continue to learn about the children and families served by Parents as Teachers and the long-term impacts on communities.

Friends, Staff, Participants, Board, and Partners,
“It takes a village to raise a child” is an oft quoted proverb that speaks to the power of community and shared effort. The well-known saying carries a profound message about community and our shared responsibility to support the optimal health, learning, and growth of our most vulnerable citizens, community and family members.
Effective home visitation is intrinsically relationship-based. As partners, we strive to relinquish the starring role, whether we’re partnering with families, team, or community, in order to create an environment where everyone’s perspectives and contributions are valued.
Participants are our key partners. We are humbled as so many make the effort to share with us their thoughts and feelings about relationships that develop with their personal home visitor. One parent had this to say, “She worked very hard to tailor PAT resources to our family and our specific questions.” Another parent stated succinctly, “I enjoy the relationship with my home visitor and feel supported in my parenting journey.” Our hope is that all our participants would feel the same! Partnering is a must-have if we are to realize positive outcomes for home visiting participants and research shows that tailoring services for individual families is an active ingredient of effective home visiting. Truly, partnering is key!
2023-24 provided us with ample additional opportunities to put partnership into practice. Melissa had this to share about her experiences partnering with Heidi during reflective supervision: “The first thing that came to my mind was how we have been using the PAT reflective supervision plans. I feel that they have really enhanced our supervision time. The plans allow Heidi and I to partner together as we have conversations about the work that we are doing and challenge each other to set goals, try new things, and celebrate accomplishments. The reflective supervision plans also push us to reflect on our work, our personal lives, and how we are taking care of ourselves.” – Love that, thanks Melissa! The team also put partnering into practice as we worked together to develop an annual workflow plan (one powerful take-away from the PATNC International Conference). The plan is a strategy to support SRPAT’s commitment to continuous quality improvement efforts as we strive towards ongoing impact and strong, sustainable outcomes.
South Region Parents as Teachers is committed to building and strengthening our partnering relationships with participants, staff, program partners, and community. Fred Rogers said, “In every neighborhood, all across our country, there are good people insisting on a good start for the young and doing something about it.” This, without a doubt, describes each member of this dedicated team. Everyday they make a difference in the lives of young children and families. I look forward to continuing to serve alongside this amazing and passionate group. Thank you for your support, vision and dedication. - Rose
